Cindy Hii

Cindy Hii Internal Audit Director

“The woman who inspired (and continues to inspire) me is my late maternal grandmother. Being orphaned at 10, she only received a third-grade education and moved alone to a foreign country by arranged marriage. She lived a hard life as a sharecropper, raised a family of 8, fought for her daughters’ access to education (who became a nurse and a teacher) and realized her lifelong dream of having a house of her own at 70.

My grandmother remains my biggest role model for independence, kindness, a lifelong love for learning and a simple life.”

Yilla Smith

Yilla Smith Director of Housing Opportunity Programs and Initiatives

“So many women have been an inspiration, but my mother and my aunt truly shaped me into the person that I am today. Growing up my mother taught me the value of hard work and education; she worked three jobs to send me and my brother to private school and college. My aunt made certain that I was always using what I’d learned and come to know to help others. She would have me teach the children in her daycare and often signed me up to work in the local food pantries and participate in other community efforts.

Together, both my mother and my aunt encouraged me to follow my dreams, never stop learning and have a servant’s heart wherever I go and in all that I do.”

Stephanie Flanders

Stephanie Flanders Director of Low Income Housing Tax Credit

"The woman that inspires me the most is my grandmother. She embodies a balance of both incredible strength and meekness that I strive to emulate. This well-known quote from Kavita Ramdas (another incredibly inspirational woman) perfectly sums up the woman that my grandmother is and who I aspire to be:

'We need women who are so strong they can be gentle, so educated they can be humble, so fierce they can be compassionate, so passionate they can be rational, and so disciplined they can be free.'”

Valerie Moore

“Former First Lady Michelle Obama inspires me. I admire her for her grace, her compassion, and her advocacy for the empowerment of women.”
