Tips for Choosing a Real Estate Agent

Choosing a real estate agent to work with is a big decision. Start by talking to friends and family to see if they have had a positive experience and would make a recommendation.

You can also search online to find an agent. On the Virginia Housing website, you can see a list of real estate agents that are members of our Real Estate Agent Connection. Every agent on this list has completed our training program so you can feel confident they understand how to work with first-time and repeat homebuyers.

Remember that not every agent will be the right fit for you. A good practice is to interview a few agents and discuss your needs with them. Since you’ll be working closely with your real estate agent, it’s important that you have a good relationship and can communicate with them honestly and clearly.

Ask questions to ensure a good fit

  • Are you a full-time or part-time agent?
This will give you an idea of their availability and schedule.
  • Are there any limits on the search area?
Make sure your agent is using the multiple listing service (MLS) in the area you’re interested.
  • Which neighborhoods do you primarily work in?
It’s important to find someone who knows the area very well so you get accurate information.
  • What kind of communication should I expect?
Set expectations about the best method for keeping in touch whether it’s phone calls, texts or emails.
  • Are you part of a team?
Knowing if you’re working with one agent or a team is important during the process.
  • What is your homebuying strategy?
Ask any potential agents to walk you through their process of homebuying. You should be able to understand each step, including finance options.

Finally, make sure you are comfortable with your real estate agent and their process and practices. You will be spending a lot of time working together as your homebuying dream becomes a reality.
