Before You Move In:
Inspecting the Property


Before moving into a rental home, it’s important to document the condition of the property. A thorough walk‑through helps protect you if questions arise later about damage or repairs.


Some landlords provide a preexisting damage report within five days of move‑in. You should review this carefully. If you see anything missing or incorrect, respond in writing with your comments. If you don’t reply, it’s assumed everything on the report is accurate.


Areas to inspect include floors, windows and blinds, ceilings, doors, cabinets, appliances, electrical outlets, plumbing and ventilation. Taking time to inspect these items early helps prevent disputes later on.


GOOD TO KNOW
As you unpack, keep an eye out for issues. Document anything concerning with photos or videos and submit observations to your landlord in writing and in a timely manner, keeping a copy for your records.


Moving Out

When it’s time to move out, you have the right to be present at the final walk-through. This protects you and the landlord because both of you are analyzing the condition of the property at the same time. The landlord must offer a final walk-through within five days of your notice to vacate and it must occur within 72 hours of you returning your keys.


As always, make sure to capture any details in writing and take photos while moving in and moving out.
