Using Your Rental Home the Right Way


When you move into a rental home, you’re not just stepping into a new space, you’re joining a community. Being a good tenant goes beyond paying rent and avoiding damage. It’s about how you use your home, how you treat your neighbors and how you respect the rules laid out in your lease.


Respect the Peace and Quiet Around You

Most people appreciate reasonably quiet surroundings. Whether neighbors are heading to work early, caring for children or enjoying downtime, everyone benefits when tenants keep noise to a considerate level. You can still enjoy music or host friends, just be sure to balance fun with respect.

Who’s Allowed to Stay Overnight?

While you may be the one signing the lease, your home typically includes “authorized occupants,” such as family members or roommates listed in the agreement. Guests are welcome, but they shouldn’t become long‑term, unauthorized residents. A short visit from a friend is acceptable. Someone staying for 30 days with their belongings is not. Your lease will outline guest‑stay limits, and if someone plans to visit for an extended period, you should contact your landlord.


Other Considerations

While many people work from home, activities like running a daycare, repairing cars or operating any type of commercial enterprise are typically prohibited. These rules protect the property and neighborhood. Check your lease agreement for specific parameters.


Subletting also requires advance approval from your landlord, even if it’s common in some cities. And of course, no rental property can be used for any unlawful activity.
