Get to Know the Homebuying Process

From figuring out what you can afford to finding your own home, Virginia Housing is here to help. Explore the steps below to learn how to get started on your homebuying journey and how we provide support along the way.

Five Steps to Homeownership

  • Learn the Process

Familiarizing yourself with the homebuying process is the first step in making sure you have what you need and understand what to expect. Our free first-time homebuyer education classes make it easy.

  • Choose a Lender

A Virginia Housing-Approved Lender will help you determine what you can afford. They will explain why the pre-approval process is important and what financing options you may be eligible for.

  • Find a Real Estate Agent

Once you know your options, it’s time to start your home search with a real estate agent. When you meet for the first time, tell them your price range and what kind of home you’re looking for. They’ll be with you every step of the way to find the home that ’s right for you.

  • Finalize Your Mortgage Application

Your lender will ask you for additional documentation to secure your loan application. The approval of your loan may be contingent on this information as well as the results of the property appraisal. During this portion of the homebuying process, you’ll shop for homeowner’s insurance, choose a closing agent and schedule utilities.

  • Attend Your Loan Closing

Your loan is approved, and your future home passed inspection. Now, it’s time to sign the final paperwork. Each page will be explained to you before signing. From there, you’ll provide your down payment (if applicable) and receive the keys to your new home.
